Itsoseng Bio-circular Community Pilot Project

The Itsoseng Project is an innovative initiative led by SOUL to tackle environmental, social, and economic challenges in South Africa’s townships. Based in the informal settlement of Itsoseng in Johannesburg, the project combines waste-to-value solutions, renewable energy, sustainable urban agriculture, and youth-focused ecopreneurship training.

Through partnerships with universities, NGOs, corporates, and local government, the project introduces affordable green technologies – like biodigesters for clean energy and organic fertilizer – and provides skills development in business, agriculture, recycling, and leadership. By empowering youth and women to create eco-friendly enterprises, the initiative promotes food security, job creation, and community resilience.

The Itsoseng Project serves as a proof-of-concept for scalable circular economy models, aiming to replicate its success in other urban and rural communities across South Africa.

The Centane-Mbashe Agricultural Initiative (CMAI) revitalizes the Eastern Cape rural economy by aggregating over 2,000 smallholder farmers across 34 villages, transforming 2,400+ hectares of communal land into sustainable commercial farmland.

In 2025, SOUL Africa conducted an independent impact assessment for the Nedbank Legacy Trust. SOUL’s recommendations focused on strengthening CMAI’s financial resilience, governance, and community engagement. Key suggestions included promoting diversification and integrating regenerative, climate-smart practices to ensure long-term, inclusive development and sustainable livelihoods on communal land.
